Teaching Methodology – The following methods will be used:
The following methods will be used: Lectures, visual aids, questions and answers, and practical design engineering graphics on the computer to reinforce the material and motivate the student. Programs used will be AutoCAD 2018, 3ds Max, Tinker Cad and Google Sketch Up
Philosophy: The course will be guided by the philosophy that one learns by doing and that a proper balance between theory, writing and practice in designing is essential for genuine understanding of the subject matter.
Course Description:
This course is the advanced course in architectural design, which uses the software program AutoCAD 2018, and 3ds Max 2018, Tinker Cad and Google Sketch Up. These programs are used for 3D drawing, editing drawings, and other drafting applications. Using both basic and advanced functions from all programs, a student can produce hard copies of their designs and print them out using a 3D printer. The emphasis of this course is in developing architectural drafting and drawing techniques using the computer as a drafting tool and to prepare the student for the what is expected in the real world working environment. Specific topics include architectural proposal, idea sketches, drawings and 3D printouts.
Course Summary:
Drafting and CAD are now an integral part of anyone in the design field in all aspects and disciplines. CAD and 3D drawings are becoming the norm of the industry and to be fluent in using these programs to design and create the products for our society is a valuable skill. Through the use of CAD and drawing exercises, it is the goal of this course to help the student be aware of today’s approach to proposals, designing and manufacturing a product.
Course Philosophy:
The Massachusetts State Frameworks, High School that Work, New England Schools and Colleges Philosophies, and the Somerset Berkley High School Technology Plan adopted by the District will guide this course.
Competencies Addressed By This Course:
Upon successful completion of this course, a student will be able to:
Proposal writing. Understand the basics of Computer-aided drafting and 3D drawings. Be able to complete CAD drawings and 3D drawings. Understand the terminology used in CAD and 3D modeling. Produce quality drawings and understand how to meet the needs of a client. Present their design proposals using MS Word and PowerPoint in a meaningful and accurate manor. Realize the importance of the CAD and 3D modeling in the engineering and design fields. Mentally visualize three-dimensional shapes and objects and then create their design. To produce engineering drawings, pictorial illustrations and charts with speed and accuracy. Student shall put their proposals, drawings and self critiques on their website. Term 4 will consist of a culmination project where the students will write a formal proposal for a project, develop preliminary sketches, develop a final design, and produce a model representation. Grading Criteria:
Assignments will be made to illustrate each topic listed in the course outline. Handouts will be provided and students will be required to complete each for grading. Assignments will consist of individual drawings and projects, which must be completed during the class time allotted by the instructor. Each student will be required to keep an electronic portfolio of his or her work and present an update each semester. The portfolio will be graded and is an integral part of this course each quarter. Quizzes, oral reports, article reviews and a final exam will be given in addition to the other assignments.
