Teaching Methodology:
This is a laboratory environment; Lecture, visual aids, discussion, Internet, and software tools are all used as vehicles for discovery, problem solving and engineering.
Philosophy:
This course uses an applied science approach. Every effort is made to utilize the available technology to replicate engineering and design in the real world.
Course Description:
This is an introductory course into the world of graphic engineering. The facility here at Somerset High School will allow students to utilize the latest version of Microsoft Office, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Publisher, and Adobe software. Students will be introduced to the Savin Laser copier/scanner and several digital imaging techniques. Students will be challenged to research the characteristics of graphic products, investigate costs, styles, and associated components in advertising, distribution, and copyright considerations.
Course objectives:
Students will develop a fundamental understanding of communication using images and other visual mediums. Students will receive basic instruction in several computer graphics programs. Students will demonstrate learning through lab projects, presentations, research assignments, and completion of engineering reports.
Grading criteria:
Students will be expected to maintain an electronic portfolio of their work. Projects and writing assignments will be measured against rubrics provided. These include, but are not limited to:

Teaching Methodology – The following methods will be used:
Lectures, visual aids, projects, article reviews, and oral presentations of web sites developed will be used to reinforce the material and motivate the student.
Philosophy: The course will be guided by the philosophy that one learns by doing and that a proper balance between theory and practice is essential for genuine understanding of the subject. Therefore, this class is project based and the student will develop web sites for specific purposes throughout the year.
Course Description:
This is an introduction course in web page design, which uses the software programs MS FrontPage and MS Publisher for Web Designs. These programs are used for designing and editing web pages. Using both basic and advanced functions, you can produce a professional looking web site. The emphasis of this course is in designing and developing web pages for various purposes and goals. Specific topics include HTML language, web page organization, ease of use, and meeting a specific need for the site user. The key goal is for the student to understand how the web works, how a site uses that information, and ultimately, getting the site to meet the needs of the site users.
Course Summary:
The internet is now an integral part of our lives and is especially important for educational and business purposes. By understanding how web pages are set up for the various intents of the designers, a student can better understand how to navigate through a site and find the necessary information that they are looking for. They will learn this by designing their own web sites to meet various goals or purposes. They will also be required to present their final designs to the class through an oral presentation and/or PowerPoint presentation. The use of MS PowerPoint and oral presentations will be an integral part of this course, as well as intellectual writing.
Course Objective:
This course is designed as an introduction to Web Page Design and to prepare the student for the more advance courses in Technology and Graphic Design. Students will learn to organize problems using the computer and exercises. They will produce finished web pages that will meet the goals of the assignment and potential users of the site.
Competencies Addressed By This Course:
Upon successful completion of this course, a student will be able to:
1. Understand the basics of Web Page Design.
2. Be able to design a useful and intelligent web site.
3. Understand the terminology of the web and the components that make up a web page.
4. Produce quality web pages and understand how to meet the goals of the various types of web pages.
5. Present their creations using MS PowerPoint or other means in a meaningful and accurate manor.
6. Realize the importance of the internet and web pages in our society.
7. Produce customized graphics and designs for their web pages.
8. Understand why web pages are set up the way they are in order to provide the required information to the end user.
Grading Criteria:
Assignments will be made to illustrate each topic listed in the course outline. Handouts will be provided and students will be required to complete each for grading. Assignments will consist of individual projects or group projects depending on the complexity of the topic under consideration. Each student will be required to keep a copy of his/her work. Oral presentations and article reviews will be given in addition to other assignments.
